You spent years getting good at your craft. Design, typography, systems, interaction. Taste.

And the value of pushing pixels in Figma just stopped existing.

That's blunt and I'll stand by it, because the thing that actually mattered across all those years was never the pixel pushing. It was the judgment underneath it. That part didn't get cheaper. Everything around it did.

Everything built with AI looks the same

Anyone can open Claude now and ask for a website that's good enough. And they do, constantly, and the results all look the exact same.

Not because the tools are bad. Because they're missing the thing that made you valuable in the first place.

Give ten designers the same brief and the same tool and you'll get ten different results. They won't vary by prompt length. They'll vary by whoever knows the headline needs to lose three words, and whoever can tell that a layout is technically balanced and emotionally dead.

That gap doesn't close. It's the whole job, and it always was. We just used to bury it under six weeks of execution and call the execution the skill.

The market flipped

Building is cheap now. Judgment is expensive.

Designers have been stockpiling judgment their entire careers without ever getting to charge for it properly, because they could never get past the handoff. I've spent eight years telling anyone who'd listen that designers should publish their own work, and the answer was always the same. I can't code.

That answer has expired.

Here's the hard truth

Taste on its own isn't enough. It never really was.

A great eye attached to someone who can't ship is still a person waiting on somebody else's calendar. The designers doing well right now aren't the ones with the best taste. They're the ones with good taste who can get it live by Friday.

AI will not replace you. AI-enabled designers will.

So the shift isn't "learn to code". It's closing the gap between idea and publish. Everything else is a tooling decision, and tooling decisions change every six months anyway.
